Donations totaling $70,000 have been awarded to Wellington charities by Nikau Foundation at a special event held recently.
Nikau Foundation is The Tindall Foundation’s regional Funding Manager in Wellington and each year it gives away money on The Tindall Foundation’s behalf. This year more than $70,000 was given away to support a wide variety of social causes in the Wellington region.
In receiving the grant, Amanda Calder from the Refugee Family Reunification Trust said the funds allowed refugees who had not seen their families, in some cases for many years, to finally be reunited safely in Wellington. Amanda quoted the words of one refugee who received assistance: “Your help will change my life and the life of my family”.
Catriona Ferguson from the New Zealand Book Council said the money would be used for their Writers in Schools programme. She said that the programme engaged readers of the future, and for the writers, it meant they had the chance to be in front of a live audience. She said they hoped to get New Zealanders to read more, especially books by New Zealand authors.
Lance Hurly from the Upper Hutt Foodbank said the Foodbank had given out 1,400 food parcels this year and fed more than 4,500 people. He said that a community can be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens and in that respect, Upper Hutt is a very caring society.
“Nikau and The Tindall Foundations were among the few organisations willing to make grants available to Foodbanks to buy food,” he said.
Another award function for The Tindall Foundation donations and Nikau Foundation endowment fund grants will be held for Porirua and Kapiti recipients at a garden party in Otaihanga on November 6.
The Nikau Foundation will also host another function for Nikau Foundation endowment fund recipients in Wellington on November 30.
The Nikau Foundation is part of a world-wide network of Community Foundations set up to benefit a specific geographic area. The Foundation attracts endowment gifts, trusts and legacies, which are invested in perpetuity. The primary objective is to make a real and long-lasting difference to the region through encouraging generosity and philanthropy.
