The Tindall Foundation has supported the community foundation movement in New Zealand for the last 18 years. There are now 16 community foundations across the country and we have worked with many of these to help grow their funds and capacity. For example, we have contributed $187k to Advance Ashburton since 2003; $247k to the Northland Community Foundation since 2003; and $246k to the Geyser Foundation in Rotorua/Taupo since 2007.
We have also funded the national umbrella organisation, Community Foundations of New Zealand, which launched in 2013, contributing over $410k.
Community Foundations of NZ (CFNZ) was established as a national body to support and represent the growing community foundation movement in New Zealand, assist regional foundations and help establish new ones.
With funding from The Tindall Foundation, CFNZ has successfully organised a number of national workshops for Community Foundation trustees and staff to come together and learn from each other and from overseas experts in the Community Foundation field.
In 2016 we gave a donation to support the establishment of a national office based in Wellington for Community Foundations of New Zealand and assisted with employing a CEO help grow new Community Foundations, to enhance the capability of existing ones, to provide professional development opportunities for staff and Trustees, to establish national professional standards, and to promote the value of Community Foundations in New Zealand.
We believe there is still considerable potential for growth for Community Foundations in New Zealand, both in terms of their individual size and in additional geographical locations. The Tindall Foundation is continuing to support this movement for place-based giving.
The 16 Community Foundations across New Zealand now have total managed funds of over $110m (up 8% over the last year), and future bequests of $278m – up from $250m a year ago.
Another Community Foundation is due to be established in 2018 – this time in Clutha.
